Birch Cottage – A green off grid retreat

Birch Eco Cottage is part of our organic smallholding near Ballyroney where it sits amidst the unique County Down landscape of rolling drumlin hills. With views of our woodlands on one side and the Mourne Mountains on the other, the cottage is a quiet, rural retreat.

You can expect a cosy, well crafted space that has the highest environmental credentials but which doesn’t compromise visitor comfort. This is what makes Birch Cottage one of the few cottages in Northern Ireland to hold a Green Tourism Gold award and a 4 star Tourism Northern Ireland rating.

Sleeping two people in a super-king size bed with views of the birch wood, the cottage has an ensuite bath/shower room, comfortable living-dining room with a woodburning stove and views of the mountains, as well as a well equipped kitchen. Organic cotton bed linen and towels are provided, as are basic essentials such as tea, coffee and kitchen condiments. Guest parking is outside the cottage, and you are free to explore the woodlands.

You might also like to wander in the gardens and meet our horses or cosy beside the fire – all guests get a generous supply of firewood.

Powered entirely by solar and wind power, with a wood burning stove and solar hot water to provide underfloor heating and hot water, the cottage is proudly carbon neutral.

There are a number of lovely walks close by the cottage, through Lackan Bog Area of Special Scientific Interest, and Annahunshigo lake. Local shops, pubs and restaurants are five miles away.

The beautiful Mourne Mountains and seaside town of Newcastle are also close by.
We are perfectly located for Mountain Bike trails and National Outdoor Centre in Tollymore Forest Park, as well as the Life Outdoor Pursuits Centre, Maze, Arboretum, and walks in Castlewellan Forest Park.
